Heinrich Böll Memorial Weekend
Achill Island Ireland.
April 29th - May 1st 2011.
The annual Heinirch Böll Memorial Weekend 2011 will take place on Achill Island Friday April 29th to Sunday May 1st. The event opens at 7.00pm Friday April 29th at the Cyral Gray Memorial Hall Dugort at 7.00pm. Official opening will be performed by Angela Spizig (Vice Mayor Cologne).
This years programme will focus on the 60 anniversary of the publication the publication of “ The End of the Affair” by Graham Greene, - a book associated with Graham Greene’s time in Achill.
On Friday evening English journalist William Cash (Author of The Third Woman) will give a lecture on Graham Greene in Achill and the publication of “ The End of the Affair” by Graham Greene. Questions and open discussion led by Dr Lara Feigel. Lecturer in English King’s College London.
The event also includes guided walks in Achill and on Inishskea South led by Archeologist Eoin Halpin. Seminar on creative writing by Jack Harte, lecture by Rene Böll on the work of his parents, Heinrich and Annamarie Böll, and lecture by Dr Lara Feigel. Lecturer in English King's College London on writing in the years after the war and an introduction talk from film Director Neil Jordan and screening of his 1999 film The End of the Affair.
Also readings by Harry Clifton, Ireland Professor of Poetry, and by award winning German writer Michael Kleeberg, and Neil Jordan at St. Thomas’s Church, Dugort, on Saturday evening April 30th , followed by an open forum discussion led by Jack Harte.
This event is organised by the Achill Heinrich Böll Association. Funding and support from Mayo Co Council, Arts Council of Ireland and in association with the Goethe Institute, Dublin.
