Sustaining the Arts/Writing Movies
As part of its policy for Sustaining the Arts, Roscommon County Council are inviting expressions of interest from members of the public who wish to participate in a course entitled Writing Movies. The course will be facilitated by Director/Writer Laurence Henson.
This course is one of immersion in the world of imagination and storytelling. It provides stimulation and ideas for anyone interested in telling stories through pictures. Award-winning filmmaker Laurence Henson’s love of film and his experience and understanding of his subject matter makes this a very interesting course for anyone interested in the world of film making, writing for screen and documentary.
The references and content are wide-ranging, from Aristotle to recent TV programmes and Ads. Even if you haven’t read that book or seen that film his explanations are very clear. He also uses video to demonstrate how every line of dialogue and every image used are essential to telling the story.
He explains plot development and shows how character drives the plot. He talks about ‘protagonist’ and ‘antagonist’ and how the story weaves around them and, when well done, seems to produce the inevitable but not glaringly obvious conclusion.
He shows familiar examples of screenwriting devices, such as ‘audience superior position’ where the audience knows more than the characters and, as he does, we are reminded of the pleasure of watching a well-made film. It is his expert deconstruction of the film making process that so enhances one’s understanding of cinema. Looking out for the things he shows us deepens one’s appreciation of the screenwriter’s craft.
To finish off he gives each participant a book of additional ‘Course Notes’ which supplement the copious notes you are encouraged to make. The course is entertaining, interesting and fun.
The cost is €150.00 and in order to facilitate participation, the course is scheduled to be held over a four week period, each Tuesday evening from 7.00pm – 9.00pm in Roscommon County Library, Abbey Street, Roscommon, beginning the week of 21st May 2012. Payment can be made by cash, cheque or credit card at Roscommon County Council’s Cash Office located at the Motor Tax Office,Abbey Street, Roscommon. Opening hours Monday to Friday: 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
All enquiries and bookings to Mary Mullins, PH 090-66-37321 by 5.30pm Thursday 17th May or email: mmullins@roscommoncoco.ie.
The delivery of the course is subject to sufficient numbers registering.
