Twice yearly, the Arts Council offers grants to enable artists and communities of place/or interest to work together on projects. The scheme is open to artists from any of the following artform disciplines: architecture, circus, street art and spectacle, dance, film, literature (Irish and English language), music, opera, theatre, visual arts and traditional arts.
The Artist in the Community Scheme is managed by Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts.
The aim of the scheme is to encourage meaningful collaboration between communities of place and/or interest and artists. It is essential that consultation take place between the artist and the community group, so that both parties are involved in deciding on the nature of the project realisation. Group ownership of the art should be maintained at every stage. The Project realisation may result in a variety of outcomes.
There are two phases to the scheme:
Phase One, Research & Development, is open to artists who wish to research and develop a project in a community context. Maximum time frame is 3 months. The maximum amount awarded in Phase One is €1,000
Phase Two, Project Realisation, is open to communities of interest or place (or their representative organisations), planning a project of between 6 weeks and 5 months duration with a maximum award of €5000, and those who are planning a project of between 6 months and 9 months with a maximum award of €10,000.
Deadlines for the Scheme in 2009: Thursday 26 February 5pm and Thursday 25 June 2009

Great prizes!! Tickets: €100 per team of four. Information/tickets: Ballina Arts Centre, 096 73593 / ballinaartscentre@eircom.net www.ballinaartscentre.com
As part of the Ballina Arts Centre Redevelopment fundraising campaign, there will be a fundraising table quiz in Ballina Golf Club on Thursday 5th March, at 8pm. Tickets are €100 per team of four, with many great prizes to be won on the night. This promises to be a great night – fun, craic, an opportunity to win great prizes and the satisfaction of supporting a worthwhile project for Ballina.
Last year, the Dept. of Arts, Sport & Tourism approved a grant of €1.2m towards the development of an extension of the current building, under the ACCESS II funding scheme. This extension will include a 240-seat auditorium, a state-of-the-art dance studio, a studio rehearsal space, larger exhibition area, coffee shop and increased office and storage space. Since the ACCESS II announcement, Mayo County Council and Ballina Town Council have committed over €3m to the project, a wonderful acknowledgement of the value of the project.
Ballina Arts Centre is now required to raise €500,000 to complete the total cost of the development. This is an exciting development for North Mayo and we are very close to realising the long-held ambition of a full-scale, state-of-the-art dedicated multi-disciplinary arts centre in the town. This will provide opportunities for artists and also for the general public to engage with art and the arts in a meaningful way.
Thanks to Archers, R Marsh Electrical, Noel Coleman Electrical, the Ice House Hotel and Homeworld for sponsoring the wonderful prizes, and to Ballina Golf Club for all their support.

The ICCL Human Rights Film School Competition is calling on the best of Irish filmmakers, directors, producers and scriptwriters (amateurs, students and professionals) to turn their hands to a making a short film on a human rights issue. The aim is to help the ICCL use film as a medium to raise public awareness about human rights in Ireland. We are hoping for the films to be short, snappy, and focused on tackling a human rights issue in an original way. The deadline for entries is 17 April 2009, and five entries will be shortlisted for public screening by our panel of human rights experts.
We have secured the involvement of some major names in the Irish film industry, including Jim Sheridan, Kirsten Sheridan and Rebecca Millar, who will sit on our competition jury at the screening in summer 2009 to choose the winning film.
The winner of the Human Rights Film School will receive a place in the prestigious 2009 Summer School on Cinema and Human Rights in Venice, a 3 week crash course on filmmaking for social change, which runs alongside the Venice Film Festival from 27 August to 16 September. The School is led by award-winning documentary maker Nick Danziger and is a truly amazing and unique experience for any filmmaker or human rights activist.
The ICCL is seeking to spread the word to student, amateur and professional filmmakers and to encourage them to get stuck in to the challenge of turning around an interesting short over the next two months. Given the tight turnaround, we are not looking necessarily for high production values, but for shorts that tackle human rights issues in an effective and original way. Of course, films already being worked on, or already completed are also open for consideration.
We hope this competition will attract interest, particularly due to the unique nature of the prize of a place in the Venice Summer School and the chance, if shortlisted, to have your film publicly screened and adjudged by some major figures in Irish filmmaking. We were hoping that the competition would be of interest to the arts community in Mayo, and would appreciate any help you can offer in spreading the word.
Full details of the competition and application packs are available on our competition website, www.humanrightsfilmschool.org.
