 Biddy Jenkinson is Mayo County Council Writer in Residence 2011

Mayo County Council Arts Office is delighted to announce Biddy Jenkinson as Mayo County Council Writer in Residence 2011.  Biddy will be working with a number of Writers Groups and schools throughout the county during May.      

Biddy Jenkinson (a pseudonym) is widely held to be one of Ireland’s most eminent writers in the Irish language.  Her poetry collections include Baisteadh Gintlí (Coiscéim, 1987), Uiscí Beatha (Coiscéim, 1988), Dán na hUidhre (Coiscéim, 1991), Amhras Neimhe (Coiscéim, 1997), An Grá Riabhach (Coscéim, 1999), Mis (Coiscéim, 2001), Rogha Dánta (Cork University Press, 2000) and Oíche Bhealtaine (Coiscéim, 2005). While her verse has not been published into English, she offers outlines of her poems before reading as Gaeilge.  She won the Butler prize for poetry and has served as editor of Éigse Éireann/ Poetry Ireland.

Coiscéim is her publisher and will publish a second collection of detective stories 'Duinnín ar an Sceilg' featuring An tAthair Pádraig Ó Duinnín as detective, later this year. She also writes for children and her most recent work (in partnership with Ríbó) is called An Bhanríon Bess agus Gussaí Gaimbín.  Her plays have won Oireachtas Prizes and some of them were staged in Dublin, Belfast, Galway.

At present she lives in Wicklow, trying to make a garden with ideas from Irish history and is particularly interested in providing a haven for bumblebees.

Mayo County Council Arts Office has a strong history of writers in residence over its 22 years of service. Previous writers who have held residencies in Mayo include Ré Ó Laighléis, Sean Lysaght, Máire Holmes, John Breen, Paddy Bushe, Éilís Ni Dhuibhne and Nuala NíDhomhnaill.

Pen & Ink OPEN MIC NIGHT

The Pen & Ink writing group is hosting an Open Mic night on May 12th in Kitty McGreals pub, Kiltimagh, starting at 8pm.  Story-tellers, poets, musicians and everyone up for a bit of craic are all welcome!
