Projects Funded in 2011

In 2011, The Arts Office supported International Day of Persons with Disabilities through the provision of support for arts projects/events in Mayo which included events in Ballina,Westport, Castlebar, Belmullet, Ballycastle and Ballinrobe. These included;

Carrowbeg Enterprises  and the Custom House Studios:  Westport

Following interactive print-making workshops at the Custom House Studios Print Room, which were facilitated by artist Grainne O’Reilly, six members of the Carrowbeg Group exhibited their work in the main gallery. The exhibition was launched by Cllr Austin Frances O’Malley, Cathaoirleach of Mayo Councy Council. Over 350 people visited the gallery during the month the exhibition was on display.


Connaught Creative Resource Centre and the Linenhall Arts Centre: Castlebar

Artists Caitriona Gillespie, Claire DeBarry, Breda Burns and Jodi Coyne  facilitated visual art workshops with twelve members of Western Care based at the Connaught Creative Resource Centre. The resulting exhibition, Taking Flight, ran for one week at the Linenhall Arts Centre. In addition, The Linenhall celebrated International Day for Persons with Disabilities by screening ‘ Living Colour’, an 83-minute observational documentary film about a disabled artists’ collective in Callan, Co. Kilkenny.  


LUISNE Art Project and Tacú Family Resource Centre:  Ballinrobe

The Luisne group enjoyed  ten participative Poetry Workshops, facilitated by Dr. Mary Madec of NUI Galway and Mayo Poet John Corless, working in conjunction with the Luisne artist facilitator Breda Murphy. On Saturday 3rd December a stunning exhibition of poetry and paintings by the Luisne Art Project was launched by an Taoiseach, Enda Kenny in the Tacú FRC, Ballinrobe.


Ridgepool Training Centre and Ballina Arts Centre: Ballina

Martino and Karenet’, was a devised piece based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which was performed in Ballina Arts Centre. This engaging piece of theatre was the result of a twelve week project, facilitated by Niamh McGrath (writer/ performer/ director).


Western Care Association, Ballina and Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle

Making art the fun way’. Seven members of Western Care’s Beehive Centre attended

two days of  visual arts workshops in landscape painting with local artist Betty Brown. The workshops took place in the print room at Ballinglen Arts Foundation on the beautiful North Mayo Coast.


Western Care association, Erris and Áras Inis Gluaire: Belmullet

What I can do and what I have to say”, a beautiful exhibition of work, produced by members of Western Care over a twelve week period, faciltated by artist Claire Griffin. The well attended opening in the gallery at Áras Inis Gluaire, was launched by Michael Ring, T.D. Minister for Sport and Tourism.
