Projects 2013

UPSTART - A programme of arts activities in celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities takes place annually on 3rd December.

Mayo County Council’s Arts Office has made a considerable commitment to the development of quality Arts and Disability activity in County Mayo.  Since 2010, the Arts Office has provided funding for a number of collaborative projects with arts organizations, artists, disability organizations/ groups of disabled people to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In 2013, events took place in Bohola, Ballinrobe, Castlebar and Westport. These included: 

Western Care Association, Linenhall Arts Centre, Robbie Harris,  Soundscape (Galway) and Gamelan na Gaillimhe: Castlebar

Worlds of Music’was a programme of interactive percussion workshops facilitated by internationally renowned artist, Robbie Harris with service users from Western Care and community volunteers. The final performance of their work took place in the Linenhall Arts Centre, alongside performances from Soundscape (Galway’s award-winning Soundscape music program for people with intellectual disabilities) and the community music-making group Gamelan na Gaillimhe with a repertoire of classical and contemporary Javanese music played on a stunning collection of gamelan instruments from Java.


Luisne Artists, dance artist Rachel Parry & visual artist Breda Murphy: Ballinrobe

‘Open Arms’, was an exhibtion and video work, produced by the Luisne Art Group in Ballinrobe. Arising from a series of Movement and Dance Workshops facilitated by artist Rachel Parry alongside ongoing visual arts workshops facilitated by artist Breda Murphy, this new work encouraged the artists to work with physical movement and big gestures. They produced large-scale artworks on which were bold and colourful.  The exhibition and DVD were launched at an event in Tacú Family resource centre, Ballinrobe on December 3rd. The 8 foot by 4 foot artworks were later installed in the grounds of The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough, for the duration of Feile na Tuaithe, seen by over 25,000 visitors.


Carrowbeg Artists Collective and The Custom House Studios: Westport

This project encouraged the Carrowbeg artists to explore working in three dimensions. Following sculpture workshops over eight weeks with artists John McHugh and Grainne O’Reilly the group visited sculptor Tim Morris’s foundary to see how bronze is cast. They were invited to exhibit their wonderful sculptures at the Custom House Gallery end of year exhibition, alongside professional artists.


Rural Training Centre, Local Disability Groups, Lismirrane Arts Centre & artist Tom Meskell: Bohola

‘Light Catcher’ was a group exhibition following visual arts workshops hosted the Rural Training Centre.  Artist Tom Meskell, worked with a number of local disability groups inclusing: the Irish Wheelchair Association (Ballyheane), The Cheshire Home (Bohola), The Sacred Heart Hospital (Castlebar), The Luisne Art Group (Ballinrobe)  and Áirc (Castlebar – supporting children with disabilities in Mayo). Their collective artworks, an impressive installation of  light catchers made from wire and coloured tissue, were exhibited in The Lismirrane Art Centre, Bohola.
