Inside Out

James was interested in the modern nature of the estate, the buildings and layout, also the communal sense of the estate and it's proximity to the neighbouring Growing Local initiave.

He is working on 2 different outcomes.  The first will utilise some of the gable ends of the houses.  James will recreate vertical or horizontal strips of wallpaper from stainless steel that will have wallpaper designs etched or bead blasted on to the mirrored surface.

The second part of the project involves the casting of a range of vegetables grown at the site.  Residents were invited to a day long workshop to learn how to create moulds and casts for the creation of bronze sculptures.  These will be installed in the entrance of the communal building in the estate.

The title of the work, Inside Out, makes a literal reference to the activity of bringing the inside out, interior wallpaper to an exterior wall, and the reverse in bringing the vegetables into an interior space. This title also makes reference to the phrase 'inside out' meaning to know something, or someone, inside out, implying an overtfamiliarity with a subject, space or place, such as the home, which one would know inside out.
