Celebrating our communities on Mayo Day

National Community Weekend 4th – 6th May 2019

Mayo Day, the day dedicated to the celebration of the culture, vibrant communities and unquenchable spirit of Co Mayo, returns for its fifth year on Saturday 4th May 2019.

Mayo Day, Mayo Local Community Development Committee and the Department of Rural and Community Development’s National Community Weekend initiative have funding available for community events taking place from May 4th – 6th 2019.

We’re inviting communities to get involved by organising a local event under the theme of Mayo Day

Mayo Day and National Community Weekend are about connecting with neighbours and friends, strengthening relationships that are already established, opening new lines of communication to one another and fostering inclusivity for everyone.

There are many types of events that you can arrange from a Mayo Day ‘Street-feast’ to a coffee morning in the local Community Centre, a story-telling night, a sing-song or poetry reading, a performance or workshop.  The ways you can get involved in the name of Mayo Day and National Community Weekend are endless.

Typical grants will be in the €100 – €400 range per event.  If a community group has a larger initiative in mind, please contact us at community@mayococo.ie or at 094 9064397 to explore your idea further.  Applications for Irish language events are particularly welcome.

You can easily apply here (MS Word) or here (PDF) for funding.  The closing date for receipt of completed application forms is Tuesday, 19th of March 2019.

Pride of Place Awards 2018

County Mayo community groups were honoured at the annual IPB Pride of Place awards held in Cork City Hall on Saturday evening (November 17).

Balla lifted the best Urban Neighbourhood/Village with a population between 300 and 1000 with the Erris branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association coming runners up in the Community Wellbeing Initiative category.

Mayo was represented by three projects at the awards – Balla, Erris IWA and Céide Coast Community Tourism project. All three were nominated earlier in the year by Mayo County Council.

Representatives from all three projects were among the 800 strong crowd in City Hall, Cork.

Pride of Place is an annual all-island competition organised by Co-operation Ireland, IPB Insurance and Local Authority partners which acknowledges the work of communities all over the island of Ireland. Judging took place in August and consisted of a site visit to each location with presentations by community representatives of their achievements and tours of the areas.

Spokesperson and Head of Community Engagement for Mayo County Council, Ms Síofra Kilcullen, said ‘We are extremely proud of our three entries who work tirelessly to make their communities better places to live, work and visit. That work goes on every day, and are delighted to get a chance to acknowledge it through the Pride of Place Competition’

A big congratulations to all!‌
