Cleaner Community Awards

‌‎Cleaner Community Campaign 2017

Each year as part of its mission to promote and protect the environment, Mayo County Council organises a Cleaner Community Campaign. This campaign involves Community Groups, Schools, Tidy Town Committees etc and is geared towards fostering a sense of pride of the local community’s surroundings.

The 2017 competition had five categories which were as follows:

1                    Bloomin Lovely

2                    Sweep Your Street

3                    Best Kept Primary School

4                    Best Kept Burial Ground

5                    Adopt a Mile

6                    Coast Boast

Bloomin Lovely:

This category is open to all communities who undertake brightening of their community through planting of flowers/shrubs/native trees.

The winners under each category for 2017 were as follows:

1st                   Ballindine

2nd                   Turlough

3rd                   Belcarra

Best Kept Burial Ground

This category was introduced to promote participation by local communities in the upkeep and maintenance of their local burial grounds.  A large number of Community Groups are now actively involved in the maintenance of their own burial ground.  Local community committees can be justified in feeling a sense of satisfaction and pride for the work they have carried out in their respective areas.

And this year’s winners are:-

1st                   Crossmolina Burial Ground

2nd                   Parke Burial Ground

3rd                   Killeen Burial Ground, Newport

Sweep Your Street

This category is open to all Tidy Towns Committees to encourage participants including residents to keep litter under control on their street.

1st    Castlebar

2nd   Ballyhaunis

3rd    Charlestown

Coast Boast

This category is open to all communities who were interested in keeping a stretch of coastline/beach litter free.

Adopt a Mile

This category is open to all secondary school and community groups in the County.  They were invited to submit details of a selected mile or roadside that is prone to litter.  Stretches of road already being judged within the Litter Action League were excluded from this.
