Greener Community Awards

Mayo County Councils Greener Community Campaign is open to all community groups and organisations in the County. The awards recognise the efforts of residents, community groups and business in maintaining a litter free well-presented Community and is geared towards fostering a sense of pride in our local surroundings. 

The focus of the campaign in particular is the promotion of bio-diversity, climate action, waste recycling & prevention and any other measures towards a greener Mayo. The campaign runs from June to September with judging taking place at various times during this period.

Applications are made under the following four categories:

  • Best Kept Burial Ground: This category is open to all burial ground committees and other organisations who maintain their burial grounds to a high standard. Works include grass maintenance, weed control, litter control and tidiness, waste management and segregation and general upkeep.
  • “Go Green, Keep Clean”: This category is open to all communities. Marks will be awarded on litter management, landscaping - flowers, trees, shrubs, community involvement, streetscapes, provision of recycling, promotion of biodiversity e.g."bug hotel", pollination plans, community garden, butterfly garden, community composting and any other greening initiatives.
  • The Greenest School” – Primary: This category is open to all primary schools in the County. Management/teachers are invited to submit details of activities proposed or already taking place in their schools e.g litter control, tree, flower or vegetable planting, composting or other enhancement works. Promotion of biodiversity e.g. "bug hotel", pollination plans, community garden, butterfly garden, community composting and any other greening initiatives.
  • Cleaner Catchments – Source to Sea: This is a special award for communities working towards protecting their local rivers, lakes, estuaries and beaches. Community groups are invited to submit details of activities proposed or already taking place in their communities e.g. community environmental awareness projects/events based around water catchments.

 

The closing date for the campaign was Friday 31st May, 2019 and we look forward to announcing the winners at our annual awards night to be held later in the year.
