Evalution of Regional Waste Management Plans

This is to advise that an evaluation has commenced of each Regional Waste Management Plan and consequent on these evaluations, plans will be revised or replaced as necessary to comply with the Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) as transposed through European Communities (Waste Directive) Regulations 2011 (S.I.
126 of 2011). The existing Regional Waste Management Plans must be evaluated by 31 December 2012.

Evaluation of the Replacement Waste Management Plan for the Connacht Region 2006 - 2011

This is to advise that Connacht Waste Management Region has commenced an evaluation of the Replacement Waste Management Plan for the Connacht Region 2006 – 2011 and, consequent on this evaluation, the Plan will be revised or replaced as necessary to comply with the Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) transposed through European Communities (Waste Directive)Regulations 2011 (S.I. 126 of 2011). Freetrade Launch in Mayo

The Cathaorileach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Michael Burke and the Major of Castlebar Cllr Ger Deere, County Manager Peter Hynes and representatives of Mayo County Council with An Taoiseach, Mr Enda Kenny, T.D when he officially launched www.freetradeireland.ie, a free national service where householders and businesses in Mayo can pick up and pass on quality items such as home and office furniture, baby goods, electronics, DIY/construction materials and tools, sports equipments, musical instruments, toys, gardening accessories and motorting items.

Sport Clubs and Other organisations planning collection of scrap metal, batteries or electrical goods

Materials accepted at these collection points can be hazardous in nature. Scrap Cars, Old Farm Machines, Old Tractors, Scrap Steel, Washing Machines / Dishwashers Etc., Copper, Brass, Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Scaffolding, Scrap Electric Cables, Lead Acid Batteries, Lead, Engines, Electric Motors should only be accepted from the public at permitted transfer stations/permitted sites where adequate controls are in place to prevent environmental pollution.

Free Trade Ireland

FreeTrade Ireland is a web service designed to facilitate and encourage the reuse of household and business items.

The service was developed from the Dublin Free Trade application, which has been operating successfully since 2006, and is a free and accessible service for all.

The expansion of the service to a national audience is recognition of its effectiveness to:
• Protect the environment through the reuse of items.
• Reduce costs for users on waste disposal.
• Encourage the better use of household and business resources.
• Extend the lifespan and value of items through reuse.
• Contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle for citizens in Ireland.
• Bring about a change in our behavior in the management of wastes.

FreeTrade Ireland is a public initiative. The website was set up with funding from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and is funded on an on-going basis by Local Authorities in Ireland.

FreeTrade Ireland features include:
• Dedicated offered and wanted, household and business sections;
• Comprehensive item category and subcategory listings to ensure ease of access to information;
• Specific ‘ household’ and ‘business’ account types to cater for the needs of various types of users;
• Use of interactive mapping and route selection applications to help users pin point where particular items are located around the country;
• Up to date security features.

Is your butt worth €150 - is the name of the new cigarette litter awareness campaign being run by the Environment Section of Mayo County Council with the support of the Mayo Branch of the Vintners Federation of Ireland . The campaign was launched recently by the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr. John Cribbin in Teach O Hora’s Bar in Kiltimagh.

60 Green Minutes Business Competition 2010

Rx3 are launching an exciting competition to encourage the development of business ideas working with waste materials.
Competitors need to demonstrate how waste can be recycled to make new products or services by turning every day waste into a commercially viable business proposition.
Competitors will be required to present a vision/model (depending on nature of proposal and status of idea) and provide a summarized business plan showing the economic and environmental reasoning for a proposition for recycling every day waste to make commercially viable new products and/or services.

Mayo County Council Extends Free Car Litter Bin Campaign.

Mayo County Council launched their car litter campaign in the Belmullet Civic Offices at the end of 2009. The campaign which aims to increase awareness to the problem of litter thrown from vehicles by passing motorists, involved hundreds of free car litter bins being distributed to the public by Mayo County Council. The campaign has now been extended to the Castlebar and Ballina Motor Taxation offices.

Tyre and Waste Tyre Regulations track movement of tyres.

Mayo County Council is running a campaign to raise awareness to the Waste Management (Tyres and Waste Tyres) Regulations 2007. The new scheme which involves the establishment of an industry based tracking system for tyres and waste tyres commenced at the beginning of 2008 and is currently being implemented throughout the Country. The scheme aims to track the movement of tyres from when they are put on the Irish Market to when they come to the end of life.

Waste Battery Drop-off Points

In order to maximise take back arrangements for members of the public, Mayo County Council are using their network of offices and libraries throughout the County as designated collection points. WEEE Ireland have supplied small “blue boxes” which can be used by the public to correctly dispose of their small batteries. All waste household portable batteries such as AA, AAA, C and D and also waste batteries from toys, power tools, mobile phones, watches etc. can be disposed of in these blue boxes. Please note that waste car batteries and industrial batteries should be brought to the Recycling Centre
