Protection of the Environment Act 2003
The Litter Pollution Act
1997 prohibits littering of any substance or object by any person in a public place, or in any place that is
visible to any extent from a public place.
The occupier of a public place has a duty to keep that public place free
of litter.
Mayo County Council wishes
to remind the public that it is an offence to deposit any such litter including cigarette litter in a
public place.
Mayo County Council’s Litter Wardens are responsible for the enforcement of the Litter Pollution Act. On-the-Spot fines of €125.00 for non-compliance with the law will be issued where necessary.
A person guilty of an offence shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding €3,000.00, on conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding €130,000.00.
