Mayo is host to Ireland's newest national park which is centered on the Nephin Beg mountains. This park is still under development, but is well-marked on newer maps.

Mayo County Council and the three Town Councils maintain a number of green spaces and parks around the county. In addition, there are several parks and greenbelts available for public use.

Coillte's Open Forests

Coillte - the Forestry Service of Ireland (external website; opens in new window) invites the public to walk and drive (on the roads only) into the forestry projects around the country (provided logging or planting is not actively taking place on the day). These forestry parks vary in size from a few dozen acres up to dozens of hectares.

Some of the more prominent forest parks in Mayo include:

  • Beleek Wood, near Ballina (56 hectares)
  • Clare Lake, near Claremorris
  • Nephin Beg Range
  • Millennium Forest, near Tourmakeady
  • Arn na Geeha/Cong Forest, near Cong (at the back of Ashford Castle)
  • Glenamoy Forest, near Glenamoy
  • Doogry on the Nephin Drive, near Castlebar
  • Brackloon Wood, near Westport (a nature woodland scheme)

Note: while many farmers are accepting of walkers on their lands many more farmers do not like trespassers. Please do not walk on farms that are clearly marked as private property or with no trespassing signs. Unlike the UK, there are no 'right to walk' laws in place in Ireland and the public do not have the right to walk on private lands without permission.

Mayo currently has 13 Blue Flag beaches in addition to a number of beautiful, but not-designated, beaches and piers for fishing and leisure. A number of these beaches are staffed with lifeguards during the summer months.
