Water Framework Directive

(Environment: )
The Water Framework Directive was transposed into Irish Law by the EC Water Policy Regulations, 2003. These regulations established a number of statutory deadlines for the river basin planning process.
This directive is an important piece of EU environmental legislation which aims at improving our water environment. It requires governments to take a new holistic approach to managing their country’s waters. It applies to rivers, lakes, groundwater, estuaries and coastal waters. Member States must aim to achieve good status in all waters by 2015 and must ensure that status does not deteriorate in any waters.
Ireland is divided into 8 River Basin Districts (RBD’s) to allow for the co-ordinated management and implementation of the Water Framework Directive. Mayo is part of the Western RBD.
