Mayo Heritage Surveys & Audits

Mayo Hedgerow Survey

Mayo County Council, in partnership with the Heritage Council, commissioned Neil Foulkes Hedgerow Management and Consultancy to undertake a Hedgerow Survey of the County in 2007. The results of this survey are contained in the Mayo Hedgerow's booklet (see publications).

Mayo Thatch Survey

Mayo County Council, in partnership with the Heritage Council, has compied an inventory of thatched structures in the county. The purpose of the project was to collect the information necessary to inform an analysis of the issues surrounding the future of thatch and thatched structures in Mayo. Mayo Railway Heritage Survey

An inventory of the railway heritage of the county was carried out in 2008. The inventory comprised a documentary survey and a built heritage survey of structures along the current and former lines in Mayo. The aim of the documentary survey was to identify and collate information on elements such as maps and drawings, engineers and architects, and historical references. The built heritage inventory includes a survey of all stations and general condition survey of other structures and an assessment of significance, and a digital photographic record of all structures.

Mayo Industrial Heritage Survey

Mayo County Council, in partnership with the Heritage Council, in 2009 compiled a documentary inventory (paper survey) of industrial heritage sites in Mayo based on the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR), cartographic (OS 6” maps, all editions) and historical sources.  This survey will form the basis for future field survey carried out in Mayo.

Audit of Natural Heritage Datasets

Mayo County Council, with the support of the Heritage Council, contracted White Young Green in 2007 to carry out an audit of biological meta-datasets pertaining to county Mayo. The objective of this study is to collect information on Natural Heritage datasets for Co. Mayo, listing sources and locations of relevant Natural Heritage data for the county; identifying gaps in biological knowledge and making recommendations for future work. In this context, Natural Heritage is defined as including but not limited to flora, fauna and habitats. For further information on this project please contact Deirdre Cunningham.
