Mayo County Council operates a scheme of Higher Education Grants in respect of approved full time third level education courses at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. Grants are available for approved courses at universities and certain other educational institutions within Ireland and other EU countries.
The Higher Education Grants Scheme is generally received from the Department of Education in mid June each year. Once the Scheme has been approved by Council, advertisements are placed on local press inviting applications.
Grants are awarded in accordance with the means test set out in the Scheme. The amount of grant awarded can vary from ½ fees only to full fees and full maintenance. Maximum grants for fees and maintenance are set down annually by the Department of Education and Science.
Applications are processed and awards are made from August onwards. Grants are paid in three instalments: October, January and Easter.
The V.E.C. deals with Cert, PCC. & Diploma Courses and Mayo County Council deals with degree and post-graduate courses.
Courses in private colleges are not covered under the terms of the Department of Education Higher Education Grant Scheme.
