Procedures


Please click here to tax your car online.

For first taxing of a new or imported car you need :

  • Application Form RF100 (From Garage if the vehicle is brand new or from Customs and Excise, Davitt House (094) 9037161, if the vehicle is imported.)
  • Current Insurance Certificate - the certificate should state the Road Traffic Act 1961.
  • NCT Certificate for cars older than 4 years (see details of car test)
  • Appropriate Fee

To renew motor taxation when there is no break in tax you need :

  • Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B or Tax Renewal Form RF100A
  • Current Certificate of Insurance - the certificate should state the Road Traffic Act 1961
  • Registration Book/Vehicle Licensing Certificate
  • NCT Certificate for cars older than 4 years (see details of car test)
  • Appropriate Fee

To renew tax when there is a break in tax you need :

  • Completed Tax Renewal Form RF100A witnessed by Garda
  • Current Certificate of Insurance - the certificate should state the Road Traffic Act 1961.
  • Registration Book/Vehicle Licensing Certificate
  • NCT Certificate for cars older than 4 years (see details of car test)
  • Appropriate Fee

To renew tax where a re-declaration is necessary (e.g. change of address, change of class, change of engine) you need :

  • Completed Declaration Form RF111
  • Current Certificate of Insurance - the certificate should state the Road Traffic Act 1961.
  • Registration Book/Vehicle Licensing Certificate
  • NCT Certificate for cars older than 4 years (see details of car test)
  • Appropriate Fee
  • Letter from garage (where change of engine or class)

      Changes of Ownership Vehicles registered before 1/1/1993 :

      • Dealt with by local Motor Taxation Office.
      • RF2 Form (Available from Motor Taxation Office)
      • Registration Book

      Vehicles registered since 1/1/93 :

      • Dealt with by Vehicle Registration Centre, Shannon, Co. Clare.
      • Vehicle Licensing Certificate.

      To renew tax after a change of ownership. For vehicles registered pre - 1993 you need :


      • Completed Form RF100A (Tax Renewal)
      • Registration Book
      • RF200 form completed between buyer and seller
      • Current Insurance Certificate - the certificate should state the Road Traffic Act 1961.
      • Appropriate Fee

      To renew tax after a change of ownership. For vehicles registered after 01/01/1993 you need :

      • Vehicle Licensing Certificate, if not - top part A with previous owner's name and declaration witnessed by Commissioner of Oaths.
      • Current Insurance Certificate - the certificate should state the Road Traffic Act 1961.
      • Appropriate Fee

      • Registration of new or imported vehicles is made at the Vehicle Registration Unit, Shannon, Co. Clare.
