Vehicle Scrapped/Destroyed or “written off “by insurer.

If your vehicle is a passenger car or a commercial vehicle up to 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight, the refund will not be made unless the vehicle has  “End of Life” status in the National Vehicle and Driver File (NVDF) which is maintained by the Department of Transport in Shannon.

In order to for your vehicle to obtain “End of Life” status one of the scenarios below must be complied with

  • A Certificate of Destruction must issue for the vehicle.  The certificate of destruction must be issued by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), see *list below of local facilities, which deal with the storage and treatment of End of Life Vehicles. The ATF must notify the Department of Transport in Shannon, Co Clare who then amend the status of your vehicle to “End of Life”

Please note that the reference date for refund of Motor Tax will be the date of the issue of the Certificate of   Destruction and not the date the Dept of Transport amend the NVDF.

  • If the vehicle has been written off by your Insurance Company, they must notify the Department of Transport, Shannon, County Clare who will then update the National Driver and Vehicle File with details of the insurance write off and amend the status of your vehicle to “End of Life”. Pleas note that category C and D write offs do not qualify for a refund.

Please note that the reference date for refund of Motor Tax will be the date the vehicle is written off by the Insurance Company and not the date the Dept of Transport amend the NVDF.

There must be a full three calendar months of unexpired tax remaining on the disc after the relevant reference date for an application to be considered.

If your vehicle has been destroyed by an approved treatment facility, you should contact them and arrange for the National Vehicle and Driver File to be updated. If your vehicle has been written off by your Insurance Company, you should contact them and arrange for the National Vehicle and Driver File to be updated.

Please note that until your vehicle has been given “end of life status” by the Department of Transport, we will not be in a position to consider your application further.
