Under the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) (Amendment) Regulations, 2001 a theory test certificate must be obtained before you can apply for a first Learner Permit. The theory test is divided into the categories set out in column 1 of the following table and a relevant theory test certificate must be furnished to a licensing authority for a first Learner Permit application in column 2.

The Theory Test is carried out by the Driver Theory Testing Service. Booking of the test can be arranged by telephoning the call centre for the service at Lo-Call Numbers :

Application forms are also available in the Motor Taxation office.

The fee for the test €35.60 inclusive of V.A.T.
