Our Language Policy
Mayo Local Authorities mission is to "improve the quality of life for people living in Mayo and enhance the attractiveness of the County as a place to live, work, enjoy, visit and invest."
Mayo Local Authorities' Customer Care Charter
Mayo Local Authorities' Customer Care Charter sets out the standard of services customers can expect when they are dealing with Mayo County Council, including services through Irish:
Services through Irish
We will ensure that:
- Customers who wish to conduct their business in Irish can do so;
- Documents are available in Irish and English.

Mayo County Council Corporate Plan
The Plan outlines how we will implement our mission by providing the best possible level of customer service underpinned by value for money, inclusiveness and universal access within resources available to us and to do this we will pursue seven strategic goals. The second goal is:
To maximise the benefits of the culture and heritage of the County by promoting the development of library, arts and archive centres around the County.
Supporting Goals
- Renew and update all operational plans including the Heritage Plan, Strategic Arts Plan and Library Development Plan.
- Continue to improve, expand and promote our Library and Arts service to meet the cultural, educational, heritage and recreational needs of the County.
- Develop and promote the Museum service for the County.
- Open the Jackie Clarke Library and archive to the general public and make this library and archive an educational and cultural centre of international significance by showcasing its contents to the highest international standard.
- Promote the use of the Irish language that will ensure the survival of our native langauge.

Mayo Local Authorities' Language Scheme
This scheme was prepared in accordance with Section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003 by Mayo County Council, Ballina Town Council, Castlebar Town Council and Westport Town Council. This scheme came into effect on the 22 December 2006.
Section 11 provides for the preparation by public bodies of a statutory scheme detailing the services they will provide:

through the medium of Irish

through the medium of English;
-
through the medium of Irish and English
and for the measures to be adopted to ensure that any service not provided by the body through the medium of the Irish language will be so provided within an agreed timeframe.
