LOGAINMNEACHA NA CILLE MÓIRE | PLACENAME PROJECT OF KILMORE PARISH

Tá Turas Siar ag tabhairt faoi tionscnamh 2 bhliain ag bailiú logainmneacha na Cille Móire, Iorras. Séard atá i gceist ná thart ar 12-15,000 logainmneacha a bhailiú agus a chur ar léarscáil de gach aon cheann de na 60 bailte fearainn sa pharóiste. Beidh beirt saineolaí ag tabhairt comhairle dúinn agus muid i mbun oibre. Beidh comhairle seandálaíochta ag teastáil chomh maith.

Ba mhaith linn cuireadh a thabhairt do mhuintir na háiste a bhfuil suim acu i gcúrsaí logainmneacha teagmháil a dhéanamh linn. Ba bhreá linn dá mbeadh duine amháin ar a laghad ó gach baile fearainn sástas cúnamh agus comhairle a thabhairt dúinn. Fuair Turas Siar cúnamh airgeadais ó Fhoras na Gaeilge chun an scéim seo a chur ar bun.

An extensive 2 year project on the collecting of local placenames in the parish of Kilmore, Erris (Mullet Peninsula) has been undertaken by Turas Siar Language and Culture centre. The project will include gathering and processing between 12 – 15,000 placenames and putting them on a map of each of the 60 plus townlands in the parish.  We will have the assistance of two well known experts in the field of local placenames.  We would also need the an archaeologist to be there when we would need any assistance with historical sites and in the case of any other discoveries that may be made during this research, preferably somebody who is familiar with the area.

We would like to invite local people and people who have come to live in the parish with a genuine interest in this project.  A complete research of collection of placenames has never been undertaken in this parish before so the idea would be to get at least one person from each townland to participate and put together for the project. All this work when completed will be put on maps and made available to the public and all those participating will get an acknowledgement for their participation. This project promises to be an educational project in many ways i.e. historical, archaeological, research, genealogical and most of all fun for people working together. Turas Siar received financial assistance from Foras na Gaeilge for this project.

COMÓRTAS LOGAINMNEACHA i mBAILE CHATHAIL | PLACENAMES COMPETITION IN CHARLESTOWN
(english version below)

Beidh Joe Byrne ag tabhairt cuairt ar gach aon scoil i gceantar Bhaile Chathail - Bunscoil Bhaile Chathail, Chluain Laighean, Tamhnighan Fheadha, Bharr na Cáóige, agus Cheathrú an Chaisil, agus é ag spreagadh plé ar bhrí na logainmneacha, ar an dinnsheanchas a bhaintear leo agus ag tabhairt dúshláin do na páistí a thuilleadh eolais a fáil amach óna dtuismitheoirí agus a seanthuismitheoirí agus a gcuid comharsan faoina gcomharsanacht féin.

Iarrfar ar na páistí picitúr nó grianghraif a thógáil nó dán nó aiste a scríobh bunaithe ar logainmneacha an cheantair. Bronnfar duaiseanna ar na buaiteoirí ag ócáid speisialta le linn an Deireadh Seachtaine John Healy.

Is é an phríomhchuspóir atá ag an gcomórtas seo ná tuiscint ar logainmneacha an cheantair a shoiléiriú do phobal na háite agus deis a thabhairt dóibh aithne níos fearr a chur ar a gcomharsanacht féin. Tugann Foras na Gaeilge, Deireadh Seachtaine John Healy agus Oifig na Gaeilge Chomhairle Contae Mhaigh Eo tacaíocht don scéim seo.

Joe Byrne will be visiting every primary school in the Charlestown area - Charlestown, Cloonlyon, Tavneena, Barnacogue and Carracastle, encouraging them all to examine the meanings of the placenames around them and the folklore and stories associated with these placenames, and encouraging them to find out more information about their own locality from their parents, grandparents and neighbours.

The children will be asked to draw a picture, take a photograph or write a poem or a short piece based on the placenames in their area. Prizes will be awarded at a special event during the John Healy Weekend.

The main aim of this competition it to foster an understanding of the importance of placenames amongst the local community and provide them with an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of their locality. Foras na Gaeilge, The John Healy Weekend and Mayo County Council's Irish Language Office support this scheme.
