Frankie goes to...Béal an Mhuirthead!

Tar éis camchuairt rathúil 2010, tá an Compántas Drámaíochta Five Lamps ar ródaíocht arís i mbliana le Dear Frankie agus cuirfear an dráma i láthair in Áras Inis Gluaire ar An Aoine 15 Aibreán, ag 8.00 p.m. Ba í Frankie an chéad comhairleoir croí chráite a bhí ar an radio agus tugann an dráma seo léargas suimiúil de na seascaidí agus na seachtóidí in Éirinn agus léiriúchán iontach spéisiúil de shaol príobháideach Frankie freisin. Na teip ar an seans seo dráma cumhach Niamh Gleeson a fheiceáil. Cead isteach €15 / €12.

Niamh Gleeson’s play, in which the wonderful Nuala Hayes plays the title role, will provide an evening of nostalgia to all those who remember Byrne’s unique responses to Ireland’s lovesick women, dispensed in her comforting, but gravelly, tones. The drama also provides us with an incredible insight into Byrne’s own private life – including a 30-year affair, a love child, and alcoholism.  One letter to the agony aunt poses the question, “Dear Frankie, my boyfriend put his hand on my knee at the pictures and I’m worried I might be pregnant.” You won’t know whether to laugh or cry! However, you’ll most certainly cry if you miss the opportunity to see this performance! See Dear Frankie in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, at 8pm on Friday, April 15. Tickets €15 / €12.

For over 20 years, Frankie Byrne ruled supreme on the airwaves with her iconic show The Women’s Page. In an era without self-help books or the internet, information was pretty hard to come by. Luckily, there was Frankie Byrne. Dear Frankie celebrates the eclectic life and times of Frankie Byrne, Ireland’s first radio agony aunt. The various and authentic problems written to her and heard throughout the play offer a fascinating insight into the hang-ups, concerns and sorrows of Ireland in the 1960’s and 70’s.
