Féile Chois Cuain

FÉILE CHOIS CUAIN
(english version below)

Le sé bliana déag anuas mheall an fhéile scoth na gceoltóirí agus na n-amhránaithe ó gach cearn den tír chun na háite. A bhuíochas ar na haíonna agus ar na cuairteoirí sin, tá cáil i bhfad is i gcéin ar Fhéile Chois Cuain i measc lucht leanúna na n-ealaíon traidisiúnta. Tá lúchair orainn go mbeidh an fhéile ar bun arís i mbliana agus go mbeidh baile beag Chluain Cearbáin lán de cheol, de chraic agus de chuideachta ar feadh na deireadh seachtaine.

The little town of Louisburgh, Co. Mayo, will be alive with traditional music, song, dance and craic for the 17th annual Féile Chois Cuain over the May Bank Holiday weekend. The Louisburgh area has a rich heritage in the traditional arts. Buntings "Collector" Patrick Lynch had a fruitful sojourn in the Louisburgh area in 1802 and collected several songs. Among others, he found blind Piper Billy O'Maily who had the greatest variety of Irish songs and collected over 30 songs in the area. Bunting himself collected several "airs" in the area. Domhnall Meirgeach Mac Conmara (17th or 18th century) and Seán Mac Conmara (early 19th century) were notable local poets.

James Berry in his Tales of Old Ireland wrote "the pipes in these days (before the famine) were as plentiful as blackberries in Autumn" and Martin Moran, an imposing blind piper of 6'4", was "considered to be the best player in Connaught" in his day. Martin became a great favourite of John McHale - the Lion of Tuam - who presented him with a set of pipes which cost 35 pounds and in presenting them the Archbishop christened Martin "the last of the Minstrels".
