LANDMARK i Loch an Eanaigh | LANDMARK in Lough Lannagh
(english version below)

Tá an-áthas ar Chomhairle Contae Mhaigh Eo seoladh chlár ealaíne poiblí spreagúil LANDMARK deireadh seachtaine d’ócáidí ag Lochan Eanaigh, Caisleán an Bharraigh ó Aibreán 20ú -22ú a fhógairt. Cuirfear tús leis an deireadh seachtaine ar an Aoine 20ú Aibreán ag 1i.n. agus an clár á sheoladh go hoifigiúil ag Cllr Eugene McCormack Cathaoirleach, Comhairle Baile Chaisleán an Bharraigh. Beidh réimse leathan d’imeachtaí ar bun le linn na deireadh seachtaine, lena n-áirítear taibhléirithe ceoil, taispeántais soilse, ceardlanna, turais ar chos, turais ar bhád agus cainteanna ag an suíomh locha gleoite i gCaisleán an Bharraigh.

Tá an clár imeachtaí le fáil anseo: LANDMARK Brochure   LANDMARK - Schedule & Map

Forbraíodh clár ealaíne poiblí Landmark trí chomhthiomsú cúramach de chistí Céatadán ae son na hEalaíne chun bailiúchán de choimisiúin a chruthú d’ealaíontóirí atá ag obair ar roinnt foirmeacha ealaíne difriúla.

B’í an sprioc a bhí mar bhunsmaoineamh taobh thiar den chlár ná saothair a choimisiúnaigh a gcomhlánfar lena chéile sa timpeallacht céanna, chun réimse d’fhreagrachtaí ealaíne poiblí comhaimseartha d’aon áit amháin a chur ar fáil agus chun ealaíontóirí a n-oibríonn ag gach leibhéal a mhealladh, bíodh siad ar an bhfód le fada nó ag tosú amach. Bhí fiorthábhacht ag baint le forbairt ghairmiúil na n-ealaíontóirí áitiúla agus tiomantas chun daoine áitiúla a bheith bainteach ar feadh an phróisis, i bpleanáil an chláir.

Aithnítear limistéar Loch an Eanaigh i gCaisleán an Bharraigh mar láthair tábhachtach atá gar do chroí an bhaile mar acmhainn álainn nádúrtha ach go dtí le déanaí ní úsáidtear ró mhinic é agus tá sé i bhfolach as radharc. Cuireadh an tionscadal seo ar bun mar gheall go raibh feabhsúcháin fhisiciúla eile atá le tarlú sa limistéar ar nós droichid nua, siúlóid chiorclach timpeall an locha agus siúlbhealaí nua a chruthú. Cuireadh tús le sraith choimisiúin lena n-áirítear coimisiúin shealadacha agus seasta, tionscadal cónaitheachta agus cláir sparánachta. Tá an maoiniú don tionscadal seo curtha ar fáil ag an Scéim Céatadáin ar son na hEalaíne, an Roinn Comhshaoil, Oidhreachta agus Rialtais Áitiúil agus an Clár um Chaipiteal Tithíochta.

Tabhair faoi deara le do thoil cé go bhfuil na himeachtaí uile le linn na deireadh seachtaine saor in aisce is gá áit a chur in áirithe ar roinnt acu. Mayo County Council is delighted to announce the launch of an exciting new public art programme LANDMARK and a weekend of arts events at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar from April 20th -22nd. The weekend will begin on Friday 20th April at1pm with the official launch of the programme by Cllr Eugene McCormack Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Town Council. The weekend involves a wide spectrum of activity including launches, music performances, light displays, workshops, tours, boat-trips and talks at the picturesque location in Castlebar.

The full programme of events is available here: LANDMARK Brochure   LANDMARK - Schedule & Map

The Landmark public art programme was developed through careful pooling of Percent for Art funds to create a collection of commissions for a wide range of artists, working in a number of art forms. Key to the thinking behind the programme was a desire to strategically commission works that would complement each other in the same environment, provide a focus for a range of contemporary public art responses to one area, and attract artists working at all levels, from emerging to well established. Professional development for local artists, and a commitment to actively involve local people throughout the process, was also of high importance in the planning of the programme.

One major site was identified, the area of Lough Lannagh in Castlebar, close to the heart of the county town, a naturally beautiful resource, but until recently, fairly hidden and underused. The curation of the project was also led by the knowledge that other physical improvements were to take place in the area, such as new bridges, creating a circular walk around the lake, and new walkways. A series of commissions including permanent and temporary commissions, a residency project and bursary programmes for emerging artists, were initiated. The funding for this project has been provided by the Percent for Art Scheme, Dept. of Environment, Heritage and Local Government and Housing Capital Programme.

Please note that while all of the events on the weekend are free booking is required for some. Please see www.landmarkpublicart.com for the further information and a full programme or contact Gaynor Seville on 094-9047561 or email gseville@mayococo.ie.

'On Sight' Cleary + Connolly

 Cleary + Connolly

Rinne Anne Cleary agus Denis Connolly staidéar ar an Ailtireacht i mBaile Átha Cliath sna 1980í sular bhog siad go Páras i 1990 áit ar chónaigh agus ar oibrigh siad ó shin. Cuireann a gcuid obair gnéithe den taibhléiriú, clár faisnéise, scannán trialach, suiteáil, scríbhneoireacht agus grianghrafadóireacht le chéile. Baineann a cuid taighde le comhoibriú le hinstitiúid phoiblí go minic. Tagann a cuid obair de leataoibh chun cinn go tapa ag tógáil a lán cruthanna éagsúla ar an mbealach chun freastail ar riachtanais gach tionscadal agus comhthéacs. Ba bhuaiteoirí iad de Dhuais Ealaíne AIB i 2009.

Tá poist amhairc discréideacha speisialta, an cineál a mbíonn le feiceáil ar phromanáidí cladaí suite i gceithre shuíomh cruthaithe acu do Landmark. Tá oibreacha ealaíne forbartha ag na healaíontóirí ar bhealach ina dtugann siad dúshlán dúinn féachaint orthu ar bhealach difriúil in áit an gnáthamharc fhormhéadaithe den radharc a bhíonn os ár gcomhair. Cuirfear dhá scannán den amharc i láthair, ceann den dá shúil, ach léiríonn siad gníomhaíochtaí laistigh dena radhairc, d’amanna éagsúla i rith an lae agus i rith na séasúr. D’oibrigh siad go dlúth leis an Perceptive Science Laboratory i CNRS Paris agus CLARITY, Centre of Sensory Web technologies, i mBaile Átha Cliath, chun an teicneolaíocht, sampla comhaimseartha dena healaíona agus dena comhoibriúcháin eolaíochta rathúla a fhorbairt. D’oibrigh páistí áitiúla Scoil Naomh Iosaef, Caisleán an Bharraigh agus grúpa óige Chaisleán an Bharraigh leis na healaíontóirí chun na radhairc scannáin sin do shuíomhanna a cheapadh agus beifear á dtaispeáint ar lúb leanúnach sna suiteálacha.

Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly (Cleary + Connelly) both studied Architecture inDublin in the 1980’s, before moving toParis in 1990, where they have lived and worked ever since.  Their work combines elements of performance, documentary, experimental film, installation, writing and photography. Their research often involves collaboration with public institutions. Their work develops laterally, often evolving rapidly and taking many forms, responding to the particular and individual needs of each project and context. They were the winners of the AIB Art Prize in 2009.

For LANDMARK they have created ‘On Sight’ a series of special, discreet viewing posts, the type usually seen on seafront promenades, positioned in four locations.  Instead of being presented with a magnified view of the scene in front of you, as you would expect, the artists have developed artworks which challenge our stereo vision.  Two films of the view will be presented, one for each eye, but depicting different activities within the scenes, times of day, or different seasons.  They have worked closely with the Perceptive Science Laboratory at CNRS Paris and CLARITY, Centre of Sensory Web technologies, inDublin, to develop the technology, a contemporary example of a successful arts and science collaboration.  Local children via St. Joseph’s school, Castlebar and Castlebar youth group worked closely with the artists to devise and then film scenes for the locations which will be shown on a continuous loop in the installations.

'Landmarks' Elaine Griffin

Iris

Is ealaíontóir Meán Measctha í Elaine Griffin atá ina cónaí agus ag obair i gCathair na Mart, Contae Mhaigh Eo. Fiosraíonn a cuid oibre caidreamh an choirp le timpeallachtaí ar leithligh agus baintear amach é trí úsáid a bhaint as réimsí éagsúla den mheán lena n-airítear gloine, x-gha, ceirmeach agus oibreacha ealaíne a sholáthraítear go digiteach. Tá meán an choincheapa ina chloch coirnéil ar a cuid cleachtas.

Tá rian dealbhóireachta d’oibreacha ealaíne cré-umha ‘Landmarks’ a bhaineann go háirithe leis an suíomh seo forbartha ag Elaine do Landmark agus beidh siad suite timpeall an locha. Piocadh smaoineamh Elaine de bharr ar fíneáltacht agus íogaireacht a cuid oibre don timpeallacht, rud a sheas amach as an líon mór d’iarratais a bheartaíonn oibreacha dealbhóireachta ar mhórscála a úsáid. Mheall coincheap na n-oibreacha atá beagnach i bhfolach nó atá ort iad a chuardach an painéal agus an bealach cliste ina féidir le cuid acu oibriú leis an tírdhreach nádúrtha ar nós bláth a féidir leis meascadh leis na bláthanna nádúrtha i rith an Earraigh agus an tSamhraidh agus a féidir leis seasamh amach leis féin sa gheimhreadh.

Elaine Griffin is a Mixed Media artist living and working in Westport, County Mayo. Her work explores the relationship of the human body to particular environments and is executed in a variety of media, including glass, x-ray, ceramic and digitally rendered artworks. An appropriateness of medium to the concept is a cornerstone of her practice.

For this project Elaine has developed ‘Landmarks’ a sculpture trail of permanent bronze artworks, specifically related to the area, which will be positioned around the lake. Unlike the huge number of applications proposing single large scale sculptural works, Elaine’s idea was selected because of its subtlety and sensitivity to the environment. The concept of the works being almost hidden, or having to actively search them out, appealed to the judging panel and the clever way some may work with the natural landscape, such as a flower which will blend in with the natural flowers throughout spring and summer and be left standing alone and clearly visible during winter.

'Bridging Sounds' Fionnuala Hanahoe

Tá suim ag Fionnuala Hanahoe sna gnéithe trialacha ar am agus spás. Úsáideann sí ábhair a spreagann comhpháirtíocht tumthach, spraíúil agus oscailte. Tá suim aici a cuid obair a chur i lámha an lucht féachána go liteartha ar bhealach inár féidir leo a spás féin a chrúthú leis an obair. Is cuma má tá an spás coibhneasta nó féinmhachnach, infheicthe nó dofheicthe, inmheánach nó seachtrach, is suas don lucht féachána é a roghnú.

Féachann a cuid obair go háirithe ar tuairim spáis fileata trí thuras ar ár dtimpeallacht fisiciúil. Tagann túsphointe ‘Bridging Sounds’ saothar ealaíne Fionnuala as teideal an choimisiúin seo, Landmark. Smaoinigh sí ar mharcáil: luathmharcáil i luathshibhialtacht, luathmharcáil luath-óige, marcanna fisiciúla a mhaireann agus atá déanta sa stair ag ár dtimpeallacht thógtha, na marcanna déanta ag ár ailtireacht, na marcanna déanta inár gcuimhne agus inár bpróisis mharcála mothúchánacha. Áirítear suiteáil gléasanna déantús fuaime a féidir le daoine a chur i bhfeidhm agus iad ag dul trasna an droichead nua ag Loch Lannagh i Nascadh Fuaime.

Ceadaíonn na gléasanna seo mothúchán tumthach agus gearrshaolach óna rannpháirtithe ar an suíomh. Féachann an obair seo ar mharcáil léiritheach a féidir linn fágáil ar an tírdhreach, bíodh sé seasta nó sealadach, agus cén chaoi inar féidir leo seo ár léargas a athrú.

Fionnuala Hanahoe is interested in the experiential elements of time and space, using materials which encourage immersive, playful and open-ended engagement. She is interested in placing the work literally in the hands of viewers so that they may create their own space. Whether that space is relational or self-reflexive, visible or invisible, internal or external, is up to the viewer. Her work specifically investigates the notion of a poetic space through the exploration of our physical environment.

Fionualla’a starting point for ‘Bridging Sounds’was taken from the title of the commission, ‘Landmark’. She considered mark making: early mark making in early civilization, early mark making in childhood, the lasting physical marks made in history by our built environment, the marks made by our architecture, the marks made in our memories and our artistic and expressive mark-making processes.

Bridging Sounds consists of an installation of sound making devices that may be activated by passers-by as they cross the new bridge at Lough Lannagh. These devices allow an ephemeral and immersive expression by participants at the site. The work explores the expressive marks we may leave on the landscape, both permanent and temporary, and how these may alter our perception of place.

***Beidh na healaíontóirí thuas páirteach i dTuras laethúil d’obair Sheasta agus Shealadach go laethúil. Tosóidh an turas ag a 3i.n. ar an Aoine 20ú Aibreán, ag fágáil Halla Macalla ag Loch an Eanaigh. Tosóidh an turas ag Carrchlós Loch an Eanaigh, le hais na reilige ar an Satharn 21ú agus an Domhnach 22ú ag a 1i.n. Ní gá d’áit a chur in áirithe don ócáid seo agus tá fáilte roimh chách. Tabhair faoi deara go bhfuil an tsiúlóid lúibe tuairim is 2km.

***The above artists will be involved in a Tour of Permanent and Temporary artwork daily. On Friday 20th April the tour will start at 3pm, leaving from Macalla Hall at Lough Lannagh. On Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd the tour will commence at Lough Lannagh car park, beside cemetery at1pm. Booking is not required for this event and all are welcome. 'Modus Tollens' Jennifer Brady

Is leis an íomhá gluaisteach a oibríonn Jennifer Brady go príomha, agus inúchann a cuid saothar na scéalta sin atá fite fuaite leis agus fréamhaithe i suíomhanna sóisiailta agus cultúrtha ar leith. Is cuid lárnach dá cuid oibre é an creideamh i gcarachtar na míréalaíochta atá inghreamaithe sa phróiseas scannaíochta. Snaíonn sí gnéithe den scannánaíochta ficsin agus neamhfhicsin leis an mbunábhar fírinneach – na himeachtaí agus na háiteanna – chun réaltacht chlaonta do na háiteanna seo a chruthú. Is é a spreagann a cuid oibre ná dúil i léiriúcháin chomhaimseartha den fhírinne i réaltacht atá mínithe dúinn tríd na meáin go minic.

Clár trialach faisnéise faoin dúlra is ea ‘An Domhan atá ar Eolas’, ina míníonn glór dúinn an nasc atá idir an eala agus éiginnteacht agus amhras. Baineann an físeán le leochaileacht an eolais, agus cuireann sé an t-aistriú agus an t-athrú os ár gcomhair i bhfoirm stair dúlra. Saothar nach clár faisnéise é agus nach cumadóireacht é atá ann, ina bhfeictear íomhánna deLochan Eanaigh agus de na healaí balbha a chónaíonn ann.

Léiríonn príomhphearsa an fhíseáin seo saol dúinn, saol nach bhfuil sa réaltacht ann ach raon síoraithraitheach smaointe.

Beidh an físeán, atá thart ar 15 nóiméad, le feiceáil le linn an lae ag Teachín Creagh, Sráidbhaile Saoire Loch an Eanaigh – féach ar an sceideal. Ní theastaíonn áit a chur in áirithe don imeacht agus tá fáilte roimh chách.

Jennifer Brady's work works primarily with the moving image and is concerned with the fragility of systems of thought, investigating notions of doubt, certainty and subjectivity. Her video work examines how we read information through filmic language as being 'true' or 'authentic', interrogating the structures, tropes and conventions within documentary film in particular.

For Landmark Jennifer has created ‘Modus Tollens’ an experimental nature documentary with voiceover, focusing on the history of the Lough Lannagh site in Castlebar and specifically the family of Mute swans living on the lake. Concerned with the fragility of systems of thought, the work operates as a video essay, tracing the relationship of the Mute Swan to notions of certainty and doubt, bringing the viewer on a journey through peculiar histories of the Lough Lannagh site, examinations of Baudelaire's 'Le Cygne', misinformation about the Mute Swan, Black Swan theory and media ethics. This video work investigates the behaviour and habitat of the swans whilst also broadening the narrative to consider social, historical and ecological aspects of the site itself, gathered through interviews with local historians and conservationists. Taking the expression 'swansong' - a final grand performance - as a central theme, the work is scored with a reworking of audio extracts from the Castlebar Song Contest.

The film will be screened regularly during the weekend (duration approx 15minutes) at Creagh Cottage,LoughLannaghHolidayVillage. Booking is not required for this event and all are welcome.

'Lough Lannagh Ripples' Matt & Rob Vale

Lough Lannagh Ripples

Tosaíonn saothair ealaíne Matt agus Rob Vale leis na daoine a bhfuil sé dó. Féachann siad chun oibriú le rannpháirtithe chomh fada agus is féidir chun saothar ealaíne a chruthú ach déanann siad iarracht cur chuige comharthachta a sheachaint agus féachann siad ar bhealaí eile chun a gcuid gníomhaíochtaí nó a rannpháirtíocht a úsáid in áit. Baineann siad taitneamh as a bheith ag bailiú na ngníomhaíochtaí is lú agus éiríonn leo iad a fhorbairt agus a chur ar scála iontach drámatúil. Ag baint úsáide as teilgean, solas agus fuaim, féachann siad chun saothair a chruthú a bhaineann díreach leis na foirgnimh, spásanna agus leis na suíomhanna ina bhfuil siad. Féachann siad chun a saothar a dhéanamh beomhar agus chun saothair bunaithe ar am a chruthú ar féidir le daoine taithí a bhaint astu mar ócáidí agus mar thrasfhoirmithe. Trí úsáid a bhaint as solas, fuaim agus teilgean gníomhaíochtaí is féidir le comhoibrithe iad a chomhnascadh le cheile chun spás a thabhairt don tsaol agus chun deis a thabhairt don lucht féachana é a fheiceáil ar bhealach éagsúil eile.

Is taibhléiriú idirghníomhach é ‘Lough Lannagh Ripples’ a bhaineann le solas ag taobh an locha. Beidh na healaíontóirí ag obair le daltaí ó scoil Naomh Ghearóid, Coláiste Daibhéid agus baill de Cheolfhoireann Cheolchoirme Mhaigh Eo i gCaisleán an Bharraigh chun cóiréagrafaíocht a dhéanamh ar an taibhleiriú speisialta seo nach mbeidh ar siúl ach aon uair amháin. Beidh sé á thaifead agus beidh sé léirithe sa chlár mar theilgean faoin spéir.

www.robvale.co.uk

Beidh an Ócáid Lough Lannagh Ripples ar siúl ar an Aoine 20ú Aibreán ag an 9in. Buailfidh an lucht féachana le chéile ag an sráidbhaile saoire/taobh na reilige den loch don léiriú solais. Mura mbeidh daoine in ann a bheith i láthair oíche Dé hAoine agus gur mhaith leo taifeadadh a fheiceáil d’ócáid an Aoine beidh an ócáid á léiriú le teilgeoir ar an Satharn an 21ú Aibreán ag 9i.n. ar thaobh foirgnimh an Ionaid Fóillíochta, Sráidbhaile Saoire Loch an Eanaigh. Ní gá d’áit a chur in áirithe don seó solais ná don teilgean agus tá fáilte roimh chách.

Matt and Rob Vale’s artworks begin with the people it is for. Wherever possible they seek to work with the participants to generate an artwork, but try to avoid a tokenistic approach, and instead look for ways in which their actions or involvement can become the piece. They enjoy collecting the smallest actions and elevating then to a dramatic and fantastic scale. Working with projection, light and sound, they seek to create works that directly stem from the buildings, spaces and places they engage with. They seek through their work to animate, and create time based works that can be experienced as events and as transformations. By using light, sound and projection the actions of collaborators can be fused together to bring a space to life, and to allow audiences to view it in a new light.

‘Lough Lannagh Ripples’ is an interactive performance involving light by the side of the lake. The artists will be working with students from St Gerald’s school, Davitt college and members of the Mayo Concert Orchestra in Castlebar, to choreograph this special once off performance. It will be filmed and will also feature in programme as an outdoor projection.

www.robvale.co.uk

The Lough Lannagh Ripples Event takes place on Friday 20th April at 9pm. The audience will congregate on the Holiday Village/cemetery side of the lake for the light spectacle. If people can’t make it on Friday night or would like to see it again there will be an outdoor Projection of Lough Lannagh Ripples on Saturday 21st April at 9pm on the side of Leisure Centre building, Lough Lannagh Holiday Village. Booking is not required for the light show or the projection and all are welcome.

The purpose of the residency is to document how people are dealing with the current economic climate – particularly how people are being positive and pro-active – and to create a large-scale piece of music which clearly reflects this notion and gives a snap shot of Co Mayo just now.

‘Still Life in Green and Red’ has already been performed at Knock Shrine, Mount St. Michael Secondary School in Claremorris and Ballintubber Abbey. There will be a final performance during Landmark.

All the input from the schools and all the interviews made with people during the residency period form a soundtrack, which is the basis of a 40-minute work for the ConTempo Quartet. A limited edition CD has been produced and will be available free of charge over the LANDMARK weekend.

There will be a performance of Still Life in Red & Green on Saturday 21st April at 8pm in Macalla Hall,LoughLannaghHolidayVillage.

The performance is free of charge but numbers are limited and BOOKING is REQUIRED . Please contact Gaynor Seville on 094-9047561 or email gseville@mayococo.ie.
