This scheme allows for one child in every school to take on the challenge of becoming a Junior Road Safety Officer. The scheme has been running in Mayo primary schools for the past couple of years, and with the publication of this bilingual booklet, students in schools in Gaeltacht areas and Gaelscoileanna can now take part in the JRSO scheme too.

Under Section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003, Mayo County Council, Ballina Town Council, Castlebar Town Council and Westport Town Council prepared this Scheme. The Scheme specifies which services Mayo Local Authorities propose to provide through:-
• the medium of Irish,
• the medium of English, and
• the medium of both Irish and English.
It also provides a timeframe for the provision of services in Irish which are not currently available through the medium of Irish.

Despite centuries of language shift from Irish to English, the Irish language continues to survive as a living community language in some traditional Gaeltacht heartlands and it is also in use on a daily basis by many people outside the Gaeltacht.
The future of the language depends on people who make a positive choice to embrace the opportunities that this Strategy will create. This is the challenge for all of us.
