Winter Ready

The Winter-Ready Information Campaign is in place around the country to provide advive to the public and business through a dedicated website and associated booklet. The advice has been compiled from a number of sources including Government Departments, An Garda Síochána, the Health Service Executive, Local Authorities and the transport providers.

The main objectives of the campaign are:

To provide practical advice to on how best to prepare for the coming winter.
To ensure the public are aware of where advice and help can be found, if needed.
To reassure the public that preparations are being made and arrangements have been put in place to ensure that there will be a coordinated response to severe weather events.

Mayo Roads

The Mayo County Council Winter Service Plan 2011/2012 is now in place. The aim of this Winter Service Plan is to set out how the winter service for ice and snow conditions will be provided for County Mayo. Mayo County Council ordinarily treats 1,050 km of road across 23 treatment routes which equates to 100% of the National primary network, 100% of the national secondary network, 78% of regional roads and 3% of the local road network.

The Duty Engineer makes assessments of conditions in Mayo using a combination of information from Met Eireann & automated weather stations located around the county(4) and also in adjoining counties(4).

Despite everyone’s best efforts, there is no guarantee that roads will always be completely free of snow and ice. Although forecasting systems have improved, unexpected weather changes still occur. In adverse weather, difficult and dangerous driving conditions should be anticipated.

Water

The thaw which follows severe weather can put significant pressure on water services around the county. Below is some useful information regarding water supply.

Home and business owners are responsible for their water supply from the stopcock. Any burst must be remedied by the owner.
Many water supplies around the county are managed / operated by local group water schemes. If there is an issue effecting more than one house the local Group Water Scheme should be contacted and advised of the issue.
If the water is supplied directly by Mayo County Council, then the local area office should be contacted.
The large mains supply lines around the county can also rupture / burst. It a burst pipe on a mains is noted, please contact your local area office and provide clear details of the exact location.

The Water Services section will continue to monitor the supply around the county and try to minimise any disruption to the general public.

Housing

Weather related emergencies can happen in your own home or business. It is important that where possible these risks should be reduced. (See Winter Ready Booklet page 2). All households and businesses should consider how to respond to these issues if they occur. Contact details for a plumber & electrician should be readily accessible. If in rented accommodation, contact details should also be kept readily accessible for the landlord or management company. Mayo County Council will be unable to help with these issues in private homes and businesses.

If you have an urgent issue, or need to pass on important information and the office is closed, continue to phone the office number and instructions will be given on how to contact a member of staff in the local area. This out of hours service should only be used for urgent issues which cannot wait until the next working day.

If you have been unsuccessful in making contact with your local office, call 094 9034705. This number is answered by West Region Communication Centre for the Fire Services in Castlebar. This 24 hour centre handles all ‘999/112’ (life at risk) Fire Service calls for the counties of Connacht and Donegal. Calls will be answered but priority will be given to ‘999/112’ calls.
