Mayo County Council is a signatory of the Barcelona Declaration and is covered by the Disability Act 2005.
To comply with both standards, Mayo County Council is committed to making all of the Council's online materials as accessible as possible. We are constantly working to improve the accessibility of our website.
The site is designed in accordance with the W3C WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and conforms to most priority 1, 2 and 3 checkpoints. Our goal is to meet WAI Level A compliance on all webpages. WAI Level AA (Double A) and AAA (Triple A) compliance will be met whenever possible and “Double A” is the minimum target goal for webpage accessibility.
We have provided the following accessibility features to make the website more accessible:
- Use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for layout control of presentation
- All images have corresponding alternative text
- All data tables and forms contain additional mark-up that may help assistive technologies such as screen readers
- Skip link navigation to allow visually impaired users to easily move around on a web page.
- All documents are marked up appropriately, with meaningful links and correct heading structures.
- Where possible, we have attempted to provide documents in multiple formats.
If you find that a page (or pages) of this website are difficult to use, please email us at webmaster@mayococo.ie with details about the page and the problem(s) it presents for you. We will attempt to provide a solution to make the website more accessible to you.
Finally, all new content published to the site is published in accessible HTML, wherever possible.
Known Accessibility Issues
Unfortunately, due to time and cost constraints, we have not been able to make the entire website contents Accessible. Some known areas of non-conformance include:
- Scanned documents in the Planning search. These are image-only--contact Planning for assistance with these documents.
- Some Council minutes, reports, etc. These may exist in only pdf and/or Word formats--contact the webmaster for assistance with these documents.
- Planning information presented on maps. This information is available via the text-based Planning search.
- The map-based Self-Service PrePlanning System. This system gives a report on a specific site based on the County Development Plan and Local Area Plans. Contact Planning for assistance on how these plans impact your proposed developments.
- National pamphlets, legislation, etc. provided by government departments. Please contact the relevant government agency for assistance. This will typically be the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
- Technical reports including those relating to the Corrib Gas Pipeline and various Planning Development and Local Area Plans. Contact the webmaster for assistance with specific reports.
- Pre-2007 news and other documents may not be accessible. Contact the webmaster for assistance with a specific document or page.
A Note on PDF and Microsoft Word Format Documents
The website uses W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) technologies wherever possible. However there remains a number of documents that use the Portable Document Format (PDF) and/or Microsoft Word.
While we have attempted to provide accessible alternatives for these documents you may find certain documents on this site are available only in these formats, which require you to download and install the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software. If you cannot access the information in any PDF or Word document please email webmaster@mayococo.ie or phone us at (094) 90 24444.
Alternative Formats
Mayo County Council documents can be provided within two weeks, in any of the following formats:
- Audio Tape
- Braille
- HTML
- Plain Text
- Large Print
- High Contrast Print
Sign Language interpreters are also available, with appropriate notice, to facilitate meetings.
