About Mayo County Council

County Mayo is served by 30 County Councillors elected from four Electoral Areas/Municipal Districts within the county. These Councillors oversee the Mayo County government which carries out the policies of both the state and local governments.

Although based in Castlebar, the County Council services the entire county through a series of Area Offices located in nine towns across the county.

The County Council is responsible for providing a number of services to the county, including protecting the environment, fire protection, agricultural services, planning, road maintenance, enhancing the cultural and artistic life of the community, motor tax collection, provision of housing and the registration of electors.

The Town Councils of Ballina, Castlebar and Westport were abolished in June 2014 when the Local Government Reform Act 2014 was implemented and the services previously provided by the Town Councils were amalgamated with the Municipal Districts of Ballina, Castlebar and Westport.
