About Elections

Local Elections (the election of Councillors) normally take place every five years. The last local elections were held in 2014.

Thirty Councillors are elected to the Mayo County Council (view list of current Councillors).

The County is divided into four local electoral areas to ensure that each part of the county is represented on the County Council. A Chairman, called a Cathaoirleach, is elected each year by the members at the Annual Meeting of the Council.  The Cathaoirleach is responsible for chairing all Council meetings and acts as the key Council representative during their term.
